Perplexity SEO: How to Get
Your Brand Recommended by Perplexity
Perplexity is the fastest-growing AI engine for B2B research queries — and it works differently from ChatGPT. Here's how its citation system works and how to show up in it.
Perplexity is a live-retrieval AI engine — it searches the web in real time before answering. This makes it more responsive to fresh content than ChatGPT, but it also means your SEO fundamentals matter more here than on other AI engines. The six tactics below target Perplexity's specific citation logic.
Why Perplexity is different from ChatGPT
ChatGPT's knowledge primarily comes from training data, with live web retrieval as a supplement. Perplexity is the opposite: it retrieves from the web in real time on every query, then synthesises what it finds into an answer. This fundamental architectural difference has major implications for AEO strategy.
For brands, the difference means: content published today can appear in Perplexity responses within days, while it might take months to influence ChatGPT's training-data-based responses. Perplexity is more like a real-time index — and it rewards content freshness and source diversity more than ChatGPT does.
| Dimension | ChatGPT | Perplexity |
|---|---|---|
| Primary retrieval | Training data (+ live web) | Live web retrieval |
| Content freshness impact | Low (slow training cycle) | High (indexes within days) |
| Citation display | Minimal source links | Explicit numbered citations |
| Response style | Conversational, summarised | Research-style with sources |
| B2B query strength | High | Very high (research queries) |
How Perplexity decides what to cite
Perplexity uses a multi-step process: query analysis → web retrieval → source ranking → synthesis. The source ranking step is where your AEO work either pays off or doesn't. Perplexity weights sources by: domain authority (similar to SEO), content relevance to the specific query, content freshness, and citation format (structured content is easier to extract and quote).
Crucially, Perplexity displays its sources explicitly — users can see exactly where each claim comes from. This makes citation quality more transparent on Perplexity than on ChatGPT, and it creates a strong signal: if Perplexity is citing your content, users can follow through and visit your page.
Tactic 1: Publish fresh, query-specific content
Because Perplexity retrieves in real time, fresh content has a genuine advantage. A blog post published this week answering a specific query can appear in Perplexity responses within days — whereas the same post might take months to influence ChatGPT's outputs.
Write content that directly matches the queries your buyers type into Perplexity. Use the query as the heading. Answer it in the first 2-3 sentences. Then expand. Perplexity extracts the first clear answer it finds — put it at the top, not buried after an introduction.
Tactic 2: Optimise for Perplexity's explicit citation format
Perplexity shows numbered citations (like academic references) in its responses. It extracts specific claims and attributes them to specific sources. To get cited, your content needs to contain extractable, standalone factual claims — not just well-written prose.
Write sentences that work as standalone citations: "Brands with 50+ G2 reviews are cited 3x more frequently by AI engines than brands with fewer than 10." That's citable. "Building your review presence is important" is not. Pack your key pages with specific, factual, quotable claims.
Tactic 3: Get listed in directories and aggregators Perplexity trusts
Perplexity frequently cites aggregator sources — G2, Capterra, Product Hunt, Crunchbase — when answering "best tools for X" queries. Being listed, reviewed, and actively maintained on these platforms puts you in the citation pool Perplexity draws from for commercial queries.
Priority order for B2B SaaS: G2 (highest Perplexity citation rate for SaaS), Capterra, Product Hunt (especially for recent/innovative products), and Crunchbase (used for "who is X" queries).
Tactic 4: Build a strong Reddit presence
Reddit is cited heavily by Perplexity for "what do people think of X" and "best alternatives to X" queries. Perplexity's real-time retrieval means recent Reddit discussions are particularly influential — a thread from last week can appear in Perplexity responses today.
Engage authentically in relevant subreddits. Answer questions where your product is the genuine right answer. Participate in comparison threads. Don't spam — Reddit communities are quick to flag promotional content and Perplexity can distinguish between authentic discussion and astroturfing.
Tactic 5: Allow PerplexityBot in your robots.txt
This sounds obvious but is frequently missed. Check that your robots.txt file explicitly allows PerplexityBot. Many sites have legacy robots.txt rules that block all user agents not on an allowlist — which inadvertently blocks Perplexity's crawler.
The correct directive: User-agent: PerplexityBot followed by Allow: /. Also allow GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and GoogleOther while you're there. A blocked crawler cannot cite you — no matter how good your content is.
Tactic 6: Create comparison and "best X for Y" content
Perplexity is frequently used for research queries: "best CRM for agencies 2025", "Surfedo vs Profound", "alternatives to [competitor]." Content that directly answers these formats performs well because Perplexity can extract a direct answer rather than having to synthesise from multiple sources.
Create dedicated comparison pages (you vs each competitor), "best X for Y" guides for your top use cases, and "alternatives to [competitor]" pages for major competitors in your space. This content is high-commercial-intent on both Google and Perplexity — it serves double duty.
Measuring your Perplexity performance
Perplexity rankings should be tracked separately from ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude — the engines often return meaningfully different results for the same query. A brand that appears in 80% of ChatGPT responses might appear in only 30% of Perplexity responses, and vice versa.
Track your position ranking per query on Perplexity weekly. Watch for gaps between your Perplexity and ChatGPT performance — large gaps indicate that the type of content Perplexity prefers (fresh, structured, third-party-cited) differs from what's helping you on ChatGPT.
