How to Measure AI Visibility:
The Metrics That Actually Matter

You can't optimise what you can't measure. Here's the complete framework for tracking your brand's presence across AI engines — and which metrics actually predict revenue impact.

⚡ TL;DR

Most AI visibility tracking stops at "mentioned or not mentioned" — which is the equivalent of tracking whether your website exists rather than whether it ranks. The metrics that matter are: exact position ranking per query per engine, mention rate, citation source breakdown, and fix verification delta. This post covers how to track all of them.

The problem with "mention monitoring"

The first generation of AI visibility tools answered one question: is your brand mentioned in AI responses? That binary signal — mentioned vs not mentioned — became the dominant metric in 2023 and 2024.

It's not enough. Knowing you were "mentioned" tells you nothing about whether you were recommended, at what position, for which queries, on which engines, or whether the mention was positive. A brand mentioned as "an option to avoid" has 100% mention rate and zero commercial value.

The metrics below go further — they measure the signals that actually predict whether AI engines are driving buyers to you.

Metric 1: Position ranking per query per engine

This is the most important metric in AI visibility tracking, and the hardest to get. When an AI engine is asked "what's the best [your category] tool?", it typically names 3-5 options. Your position in that list — #1, #2, #3 — has a direct impact on how many buyers follow through.

Just like in Google SEO, position #1 dramatically outperforms #3 or #4. AI engines present options in a narrative order that buyers follow. The brand named first in "I'd recommend looking at X, Y, and Z" gets the most attention.

Track this per query (you should have 20-30 queries relevant to your category) and per engine (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude behave differently). A weekly snapshot lets you track trends and measure the impact of your AEO work.

Metric 2: Query coverage rate

Of all the queries relevant to your category, what percentage result in your brand appearing at all? This is your "coverage rate" — the share of relevant AI conversations where you exist as an answer.

A brand with 80% coverage is appearing in 4 out of 5 relevant queries. A brand with 20% coverage is missing 4 out of 5. Coverage rate is the best top-of-funnel AI visibility metric — it measures the size of your AI presence, not just its quality.

Track coverage rate separately for informational queries ("what is answer engine optimization?") and commercial queries ("what's the best AEO tool?"). Commercial query coverage is the revenue-relevant number.

Metric 3: Citation source breakdown

When AI engines mention your brand, what sources are they citing to support that mention? Are they pulling from your own website, your G2 profile, a Reddit thread, a publication review, or a competitor comparison page?

Citation sources tell you where your AI authority is coming from — and more importantly, where it's not coming from. If 80% of your AI citations come from a single G2 review, your signal base is fragile. If citations come from your own content, third-party publications, and forum discussions, your signal base is diversified and durable.

Why citation sources matter

AI engines that cite you based primarily on your own website are doing so tentatively — your own site is the lowest-trust source. AI engines that cite you based on third-party sources (G2, Reddit, publications) are doing so with higher confidence. More diverse citation sources = more durable AI visibility.

Metric 4: Competitor position gap

AI visibility is inherently comparative. Knowing you rank #2 for "AI visibility tools" is only meaningful if you also know who ranks #1, why, and whether that gap is closing or widening.

Track competitor positions for the same query set you track for yourself. This gives you: which competitors you're beating, which are beating you, and — critically — which queries are up for grabs where nobody has strong AI visibility yet (these are your fastest wins).

Metric 5: Fix verification delta

After making an AEO improvement — publishing a new FAQ page, updating your llms.txt, adding structured data — how did your positions change? Fix verification delta is the before/after measurement that tells you whether your work is actually moving the needle.

This metric is what separates AEO practitioners who compound their results from those who optimise blind. Without verification, you might spend weeks on tactics that don't work in your category. With verification, you build a repeatable playbook of what moves positions for your specific brand on your specific queries.

Setting up your query list

Your query list is the foundation of AI visibility measurement. You need 20-50 queries that represent how your buyers actually ask AI engines about your category. Include:

  • Category queries: "best [your category] tool", "top [your category] software", "[your category] platform for [your ICP]"
  • Problem queries: "how to [solve the problem you solve]", "how to track [what you track]"
  • Comparison queries: "best alternative to [key competitor]", "[your brand] vs [competitor]"
  • Brand queries: "what is [your brand]", "how does [your brand] work", "is [your brand] worth it"

Run each query across all four major AI engines. The variation across engines is often surprising — you might rank #1 on Perplexity and not appear at all on ChatGPT for the same query.
